Ramblers Association Presidents Volunteer Awards 2014
The President's Volunteer Awards are an opportunity to celebrate and highlight volunteer successes and are presented at a ceremony at General Council. Following nominations, our President Kate Ashbrook had the difficult task of shortlisting three nominees for each of the six awards being presented this year. Derek has been shortlisted in the Best Individual Achievement Award Catogory.
Derek, 82, has been a dedicated Ramblers member since 1982 and was one of the five original founders of the Rochdale Ramblers in 1994. Since the group was formed 20 years it has grown to over 230 members. For 18 years he has been the group’s Footpath Secretary working closely with Rochdale Council to maintain 342 miles of footpath and 1,782 rights of way. He has given evidence at public inquiries, objected to planning applications when appropriate and given presentations at council meetings. In 2011 he helped survey the 42 mile Rochdale Way and produce a report for the council on how the route could be improved for walkers. He is a regular walk leader but his main passion is the maintenance of the footpath network around Rochdale and he has worked tirelessly to achieve that
